The case for Unified Communications

How does an organisation know when its communications technology stops becoming an enabler and starts becoming a barrier?

Well, the clues are there. Some will be self-evident in terms of the systems features, some will come from users internally and some will come from outside of the business. As businesses move increasingly towards a more flexible working model, with employees moving freely between multiple business sites, working from home or on the move, the short-falls of some legacy systems become more apparent.

[Comtec Announce] Maintenance window 12th February 2013
Posted by Nigel Kingston on 31 January 2013 01:29 PM

Please be advised of the following maintenance window scheduled on our network and those of other UK ISPs:

Date: Tuesday, 12th February 2013

Start time: 23:00 UTC

End time: 06:00 UTC

Purpose

As part of the expansion of the LONAP Internet Exchange, of which we are member, some renumbering work is require

Impact

Due to our redundant network connectivity and peering arrangements, we are expecting no significant operational impact from this work.

However, routing to certain destinations may be suboptimal during this window. The observed consequences of this may be slightly increased latency or packet loss.

We will be performing our changes at the beginning of this maintenance window, however there is a seven hour window for other ISPs to complete their work. While we are hopeful that all members complete their renumbering in a timely manner, there remains the possibility that some members will take longer to complete, so please be warned of possible suboptimal routing beginning on 12/2.

Please note that is not specific to Sargasso Networks and will affect all UK and international ISPs that connect to LONAP. We will be monitoring the migration carefully, but it will be largely out of our hands, in the control only of those ISPs who are late to renumber.

Nevertheless, we will ensure that our critical peering partners including our IP Voice services are not adversely affected.

[Comtec Announce] Maintenance window 6th February 2013
Posted by Nigel Kingston on 30 January 2013 09:18 AM

Please be advised of the following maintenance window scheduled on our network:

Date: Wednesday, 6th February 2013

Start time: 00:01 UTC

End time: 06:00 UTC

Purpose

Our carrier will be performing maintenance on one of our redundant links between Reigate and London.

Impact

The affected circuit will be unavailable for up to 6 hours during this window.

Due to the resilience in our network, we are not expecting any operational impact from this work. However, customers hosted at Comtec House (LSREI01) should consider this "at-risk" to an outage should a failure occur in the resilient connection during this window.

If you have any questions regarding this work, please contact the Comtec NOC.

Please be advised of the following Emergency engineering works on the IP Voice Services platform:

Date: 23:00 to 23:59 on Wednesday, 23/01/2013

Purpose

The IPVS Engineering Team will be carrying out works to implement a vendor supplied patch to the Application Server clusters in the Core Voice Architecture between 2300 on 23/01/2013 and 0000 on 24/01/2013 to address the exception observed on 16/01/2013.

Impact

Due to the redundant nature of the platform there is no expected effect to Voice Services, as while an element in the cluster is being patched, its peer will sustain normal service.

[Comtec Announce] [IP Voice Services] Planned Engineering Work 26/01/2013
Posted by Nigel Kingston on 22 January 2013 09:08 AM

Please be advised of the following planned engineering works on the IP Voice Services platform:

 Date: Saturday 26/01/13 23:00 to Saturday 27/01/13 02:00

 Purpose

The Engineering Team will be carrying out works to replace a Session Border Controller (SBC) cluster with new hardware between 2300 on 26/01/2013 and 0200 27/01/2013.

Due to the redundant nature of the cluster whilst one element is replaced all existing calls and new traffic will be served by the secondary element, when service is switched from one element to another all call and registration states will be sustained.

There is no expected effect on voice calls as a result of these works.

Impact

Expected impact is LOW.

They will be closely monitoring the potentially affected systems to ensure any disruption is as brief as possible if experienced.

Regards,

Comtec Network Operation Centre
